Madeleine Iskandarian (stage name SHAHRAZAD) was born on September 1st in Bethlehem, Palestine, and was raised in Alep, Syria. Later on, she went to Beyrouth, Lebanon. She is descendant of Armenians.
When she was 7 years old, she started to dance Raks El Chark professionally, without ever having been taught. “It was a gift from God.”
When her parents got divorced, and she was still a child, she used to perform at parties and weddings to earn her living. She would dance while her mother would play the mandolin.
Shahrazad danced at the birthday celebration of King Abdallah, in Jordan, and won first place in a Raks El Chark contest. Te King was so impressed by her performance that he gave her many gifts.
She attended the Jasmin Nassar Hassan Academy, and from age 10 to 12, the Jorge Rainer Ballet Academy. Her teacher, Irma Zeiner, could not believe it when she saw her shimmy, while listening to the “Pas de Deux”. From the age of 12 to 14 she attended the Suhalm Khadra Aburachid Academy, in Syria. After that, she moved to Brazil, where her two children were born and she got divorced.
As dance was inside her, she would receive messages in her dreams, saying that she should be the precursor o this beautiful dance in Brazil, because she created wonderful movements for the body and for women’s health.
She performed in a Silvio Santos show (a very famous Brazilian TV program), and was very successful. After that she started giving many interviews and performing in various TV programs, always showing to the public the ancient art and culture of Egypt. Her exercises are new because she has created all of them. All students who have learned from her – some became teachers themselves, other professional dancers – are unanimous in recognizing Shahrazad as the pioneer in introducing her methods and striving for their recognition and secrecy.
“A dancer must not accept that men pen money on her body. They say it’s a custom, but this is not true. The dancer’s body is sacred with respect and admiration.”
Shahrazad has many exercises to be revealed but this will probably be in her new books.
